Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy focuses on neuromuscular re-education, re-training the muscles of a person’s face, jaw, mouth and tongue. It helps to improve functions related to breathing, swallowing, chewing and speech. It focuses on issues, such as mouth breathing and incorrect tongue rest posture to improve overall function.

Oral facial dysfunctions may include:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Low tongue rest posture
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Incomplete lip seal
  • Overactivity of facial muscles
  • Atypical swallow
  • Incorrect speech sounds (e.g. ‘s’, ‘z’, ‘l’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’)

The above may be associated with:

  • Tongue tie and lip tie
  • Chewing and feeding difficulties
  • Narrow jaws and high palates
  • Malocclusion
  • Snoring
  • Sleep apnea

Our speech pathologists often work as part of a multidisciplinary team with ENT doctors, specialised dentists and body workers (e.g. osteopaths and chiropractors).

We also offer comprehensive assessment into tongue tie concerns (more information on this can be found within the assessment section of this website).
