Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy focuses on neuromuscular re-education, re-training the muscles of the face, jaw, mouth and tongue. It helps to improve functions related to breathing, swallowing, chewing and speech.
Common oral facial dysfunctions
Therapy focuses on issues such as mouth breathing and incorrect tongue rest posture to improve overall function. Oral facial dysfunctions may include:
Mouth breathing
Habitually breathing through the mouth rather than the nose, whether awake or asleep.
Low tongue rest posture
The tongue sitting low in the mouth at rest, rather than resting lightly against the roof of the mouth.
Tongue thrusting
The tongue pushing forward against or between the teeth when swallowing, speaking or at rest.
Incomplete lip seal
Difficulty keeping the lips gently closed at rest.
Overactivity of facial muscles
Facial muscles working harder than they need to during everyday functions such as swallowing and chewing.
Atypical swallow
A swallowing pattern that differs from the expected mature swallow.
Incorrect speech sounds
Difficulty producing certain speech sounds (e.g. 's', 'z', 'l', 'sh', 'ch').

These oral facial dysfunctions may be associated with:
A multidisciplinary approach
Our speech pathologists often work as part of a multidisciplinary team with ENT doctors, specialised dentists and body workers (e.g. osteopaths and chiropractors).
We also offer comprehensive assessment into tongue tie concerns (more information on this can be found within the assessment section of this website).
Further information into orofacial myofunctional disorders can be found on the ASHA website.
